Washswat Ads: A Life-Integrated Ad Platform Born from 10 Years of Laundry Data

notion image

Prologue: Korea's #1 laundry app is launching an ad business

Back in 2015, Washswat (Setak Teukgongdae) spotted an industry that hadn't moved to mobile yet — laundry — and went after it. A decade later, it's both Korea's first laundry app and the country's #1 by active users.
Now the company is starting a brand-new chapter: an ad platform business.
Washswat sits on a daily-life service, AI-powered laundry factory data about the clothes themselves, and delivery-address data covering where its loyal users actually live. By combining those assets with an ad platform, Washswat plans to give advertisers targeting capabilities they haven't been able to get anywhere else — connecting brands directly to the consumers they most want to reach.
To get the full story, we spoke with Yeh Sang-uk, CEO of Washswat.

A new growth axis: the ad platform

Q1. What's the background behind launching the Washswat ad platform?
CEO Yeh Sang-uk: "Back in 2015, we were hunting for industries that hadn't moved to mobile yet, and we found laundry. Requesting laundry from a mobile app and having it picked up and delivered — that model didn't exist in Korea at the time. That was the starting point, and it's been ten years now. We're Korea's first laundry app and the #1 by active users.
For the past decade we focused on getting the laundry business itself right. But now it's time to take a step beyond pure laundry service and create new value from the data and user base we've built up. The ad platform is one of those answers."

Reaching financially capable users in moments that matter

Q2. Who exactly uses Washswat?
CEO Yeh: "Our users split into two big groups. First, single-person households in their 30s in Gangnam and Songpa. They live in premium serviced apartments, lead busy lives, and are very comfortable outsourcing laundry. High spending power, clear pattern of investing in themselves.
Second, families of three or more centered on parenting moms aged 35–45. They send us delicate items like kids' clothing or luxury garments. They're also the main consumption decision-maker for the household.
The common thread: Washswat users have real spending power, and they use the app at moments that are deeply integrated into daily life."

Regional targeting based on real laundry delivery addresses

Q4. What kind of targeted advertising does Washswat offer?
CEO Yeh: "Out of the gate, you're already reaching financially capable users. On top of that, we support regional targeting. You can zero in on high-income areas like Gangnam–Songpa or Pangyo–Bundang. Because we're targeting based on the actual laundry delivery address — not just device GPS — we offer some of the most accurate residential targeting available.
The next step is leveraging the garment data we collect during the laundry process for even more precise targeting. We run AI laundry factories that capture data on fabric, size, garment condition. The system decides whether something needs dry cleaning or a regular wash, and tracks the actual state of every item.
That opens up a whole new advertising angle. When a specific garment is wearing out and the customer is likely to need a replacement, a fashion brand can deliver 'a recommended new piece in your style' at exactly that moment. That's a precision-timed ad that traditional platforms can't really do."

Understanding users through their entire closet

Q5. What kind of data does Washswat actually have on its users?
CEO Yeh: "Fashion e-commerce works off a customer's recent purchase data. Washswat works off the entire wardrobe a customer actually wears and washes. We can see whether someone leans toward SPA brands or luxury pieces. We can even read taste — whether they prefer neutral tones or vivid colors.
Beyond that, we have garment condition data. We can tell when a specific item is three or more wears away from needing replacement, or when a specific part is worn enough that a buying decision is coming. That goes beyond pure taste profiling — it tells us real purchase likelihood. That's incredibly powerful for advertisers. We're not showing 'clothes you might like' — we're proposing 'the clothes you need right now.'"

From online to inside the customer's home

Q6. We hear Washswat ads can show up offline too?
CEO Yeh: "Washswat delivers laundry directly to homes nationwide. That process becomes an offline ad touchpoint. When a brand launches a new product, we can include samples with the laundry delivery — the customer experiences the brand naturally while picking up their clean clothes. We can also place sticker-style PPL ads on the laundry packaging. Reaching all the way inside the customer's home, naturally. That's the kind of experience few media can offer. Washswat can be a fully integrated advertising channel — online and offline at the same time."

Expanding into resale and personalized content

Q7. Where does Washswat go from here?
CEO Yeh: "There are two main expansion directions.
First, the resale market. We have garment condition data — and that data can be a 'trustworthy indicator' in resale. The plan: propose a fair market price to customers based on their items' condition, and if they agree, list them for resale. We take a small fee. Some pre-owned items now trade higher than new on platforms like Kream or Soldout. Because we have more clothing data than anyone through laundry, we can compete differently in this market.
Second, personalized content. We can serve styling curation based on each customer's actual closet data, and weave the ad business into that flow — recommending new items grounded in real taste."

Laundry is still the core

Q8. What did you focus on most when launching the ad platform?
CEO Yeh: "What mattered most was staying focused on the core laundry service while still being able to start and operate the ad business cleanly. Washswat's identity is laundry — so rather than building our own ad platform, we chose to adopt a proven solution: AdControl.
What we paid the most attention to was consolidating operational infrastructure and optimizing resources. We used to run a separate in-app messaging tool for marketing — now everything, from paid ad management to in-house promos, is unified in AdControl. The more tools you stack, the messier ops gets. By managing all advertising on a single platform, we minimized resources and ended up launching the ad platform fast and stably."

Epilogue: Life-integrated advertising belongs to Washswat

Washswat has moved beyond being a laundry app to become an ad platform connecting premium consumers and brands.
Brands now have a precision targeting channel for high-spending single-person households and parenting moms who hold the household's purchase decisions.
Because Washswat lives so deeply inside daily life, it's one of the most natural ways to deliver a brand message — right when it matters.
