NEWNEEK is a knowledge platform built for Korea's MZ generation. With 1.48 million daily readers — affectionately called "NEWNEEKers" — it has become an essential morning ritual on commutes and school runs. Beyond making the world's news easy and enjoyable to digest, NEWNEEK has been quietly building something more interesting: an ad model where readers actually welcome advertising as useful information.
In this interview, the NEWNEEK team shares how they think about ads, why they bet on a native-content approach, and what changed after adopting AdControl. 📢
🔎 NEWNEEK's playbook for connecting brands and readers
Meet the NEWNEEK team
Hello, we're NEWNEEK — a knowledge and information platform serving 1.48 million readers. Many people still know us as a newsletter, but we've evolved into a web and app platform that delivers knowledge in an easy, enjoyable format. Our core audience is the MZ generation in their 20s and 30s who want to keep learning about the world without making it feel like homework.

How did you get into the ad business?
It wasn't a master plan. Early on, NEWNEEK was purely a newsletter, and as it took off, brands started reaching out about advertising opportunities. Editorial ads were the natural starting point. Once we became Korea's #1 newsletter media, we decided to evolve into a two-way knowledge platform — not just broadcasting news, but creating a space where readers could engage. As our user base grew meaningfully on the platform side, we expanded into platform ads designed around the needs of both NEWNEEKers and advertisers.
What was hard about launching platform ads?
Running ads at scale touches a lot more than sales. Communication with advertisers matters, but internally you also need real engineering resources — admin tools, reporting infrastructure, the whole stack. So we spent a lot of energy figuring out how to run this efficiently with minimal resources. At the same time, we wanted the direction of the ad business to be shaped by who NEWNEEK users actually are. Our readers care about personal growth, so we kept asking ourselves how to make ads that could feel like a piece of knowledge themselves.
How was the ad operation structured back then?
In the early days, newsletter ads were the main format, with brand marketers and content editors collaborating on each campaign. As we expanded into platform ads, two distinct units naturally emerged: a Media Business team handling newsletter content and revenue, and a Platform Business team focused on the growth and revenue of the platform service. The sales team in particular became central, working closely with advertisers — which, again, required meaningful resources.
What problem did you wrestle with the longest?
NEWNEEK is a space where many kinds of knowledge live side by side. We deliberately avoid creating a visual hierarchy that makes one piece of content feel more important than another. But we still wanted ads to feel attractive when they appeared on the platform — just attractive in a way that fits NEWNEEK, not in a way that screams "this is a banner."
The question became: "How do we make ads compelling while still letting them blend naturally into NEWNEEK's content?" We could have gone with prominent top banners, but given how specific our reader profile is, we leaned into making ads look like one of our own content pieces. That's how the "Native Ad Package" product was born — and CTR came in noticeably strong. It taught us directly what kind of ad format NEWNEEK readers actually respond to.
💡 NEWNEEK meets AdControl
What made you decide to adopt AdControl?
The biggest reason was simple: we wanted to run the ad business more efficiently. NEWNEEK was growing fast, but the question of how to actually maximize ad revenue wasn't solved. We were particularly focused on shortening the advertiser's decision funnel. When we came across AdControl, it was clear it would let us cut internal resources while still pushing revenue up. We didn't hesitate.
What changed after you started using AdControl?
Internal resource load dropped by about 80%. Communication is streamlined across booking, execution, and reporting, so the advertiser's decision funnel shrinks and execution rates clearly go up. Performance data is available in real time during the live campaign — we no longer have to assemble and send manual reports. And because the ad experience for buyers is so much simpler, we're seeing a steady increase in long-tail advertisers we previously couldn't have served.
NEWNEEK is using native ads really effectively.
With AdControl, we can run native ads that genuinely blend into the NEWNEEK platform. Because the ad reads like a piece of content, CTR consistently comes in higher than standard banner inventory. Advertisers are happy with the efficiency, we're happy with the range of ad slots that fit NEWNEEK's design language, and NEWNEEKers — who are hungry for knowledge — get ads that feel like useful information rather than interruptions.

Why would you recommend AdControl?
Providing a smooth ad experience is itself a sales tool. We also set things up via Adrop so there's no minimum spend for banner ads, which has opened the door to advertisers who had always been curious about running on NEWNEEK but couldn't justify the price point of our newsletter sponsorships. They start with banner ads instead. Easy operation, efficient products at an accessible price point — there's really no reason not to recommend AdControl.
✨ What's next for NEWNEEK
What's NEWNEEK's vision and goal?
We keep asking ourselves how to deliver knowledge to MZ-generation readers in their 20s and 30s in ways that are easier and more enjoyable than ever. Continuing to ask that question — and continuing to grow NEWNEEK around the answer — is our vision and our goal.
Any advice for app developers starting an ad business?
Start by asking yourself whether your app enables precise targeting. In NEWNEEK's case, our users are people who keep investing in personal growth even in busy lives — so advertisers who want to reach that exact mindset come to us. Understanding what's distinctive about your user base, what targeting becomes possible because of it, and what kind of vertical media you can credibly position yourselves as — that thinking will shape the direction of your ad business more than anything else. 😁
That's a look at how NEWNEEK, the MZ-generation knowledge platform, has built its ad monetization. A huge thank you to Marketer Kim Daejun and Manager Song Taekwang for sharing both the journey and NEWNEEK's distinctive sales approach. If you have unresolved questions about ad monetization, Adrop's team is always happy to chat.
